Angel told us to wait in front of the store while he'd get the beer. I tried to rule out the idea that I should never trust someone that would told me to wait outside. There was a heavy smell of pot coming out from the side of the store, and I wasn't sure I wanted to check if someone else was there. He finally came out with a 24. Maybe he just wanted us not to fool around or anything in there.
When we got in the car, Jay started preaching about his new favorite band, some local preppy boys that sounds like everyone else. He put the CD in the player and made air guitar solo or some shit like that. I tried to smile but the music was so loud and annoying, I frowned and showed a subtle grin. Angel told us he got a great spot to deal some pills, downtown. What choice did I had? We were already miles away from the city and, for all I know, this could have been the first step to an incredible adventure.
Past nine, we stopped at some creepy local gas station, all doped as hell. I already had like six beers and I wanted to take a leak but Angel said no one should go out for the next ten minutes. I couldn't wait so I started to pee in one of the empty bottles. It soon became full, so I had to open the door of the car to finish. But as soon as the door opened, making that awful loud bang, I heard steps of someone running. Angel's face appear out of the darkness, underneath the only lamppost in town. The goddamn look on his face... Like if he's seen the creepiest porn on the net, or whatever. And then, another loud bang! Some motherfucker from behind shot the fuck out of Angel, so Jay and I freaked out and tried to start the goddamn van and leave those sick fuck dealing with their shit alone. Fuck Angel, whatever he was trying to deal to those assholes...
"Anybody knows what's going on?" I can barely hear my own voice, and I don't know if it's the beer, the pcp, or whatever. Vicky finally wakes up, trashier than ever. It's three in the afternoon, and we try to hide from the cops. Earlier, Jay managed to speak in a phone booth with his girlfriend, wanting to let her know that Angel was gunshot, but the only thing he got out of this conversation was that someone mentioned the serial number of our car, and now we're like O.J. freakin' Simpson. Jay and I haven't slept since and I can feel we're both quite weak, but still can't think of letting this dumb girl riding us out of this shithole. She doesn't even ask about her dead boyfriend... We drive into a small bridge and stop for a few minutes, just to get things straight. I'm pretty confident by now that no one has followed us, but still have this rash on my hand and it keeps me nervous as I scratch it furiously. At this moment, though, there's a cold breeze running down my back and suddenly feel much less heavier. I walk toward the little pond of water and pour some on my face and neck. With the sun hitting on it, it looks just like a millions of diamonds... Vicky jumps out of the car and asks for Angel. None of us answers back, so she starts yelling. Obviously, the fresh air doesn't calm her. Jay proposes her to take another pill while we drive her back home. "Look, she doesn't know anything. She's no harm to us, right?" I feel awkward and nauseous, but there's no better idea I can come up with. So I agree. Before getting back in the car, I grab two hands of mud and try to cover the serial number, hoping for the sun to dry it out as fast as possible.
I sit in the back of the car while Jay does all the driving thing. I want to check out the news on my phone but the connection is dead around here. To distract myself, I ask Vicky some stuff about the deals Angel was doing, before... "Before what? Where the FUCK IS HE, anyway? WULYA TELL ME?" Jesus sweet fuck, that girl is doing a fix just besides me, yelling with her goddamn belt between her teeth. I don't want to be grossed out, but the sick shit she's doing just makes me turn blank while she gradually slips from the back seat. I grab her skinny body and try to put it all across the seat, her legs on my lap. And there's this fucking weird moment where disgust and boner meet in my belly and pants. She faints several times as we get into town again. "At least tell me you know some shortcuts around here, man... Just in case the cops are around..." Jay doesn't answer, but I don't want to get my eyes off of this tiny little body I've got in my arms, and so I make myself believe I've never asked anything.
